Years of consistent good service in the legal field makes Macaulay &

Riddell a sound example of how something can grow from small

beginnings and become established as one of Ladysmith’s most

recognised and respected law firms. James Macaulay, who

became a Senator, founded the firm in 1903. He practiced alone

initially as ‘James Macaulay, Solicitor’ up until 1932. He later was joined

by Samuel Marshall Riddell, who was admitted to partnership

immediately after World War Il. It was at this time that the firm

became known as Macaulay & Riddell. The name continued to be proudly

and faithfully retained through successive partnerships.

The present partners are James William Wright, James Howieson Marshall.

Macaulay & Riddell have served the community

faithfully with sound and innovative legal advice and expertise. There has

always been a non-wavering attitude of striving for excellence.

One of the firm’s core values has been to offer clients a solid and honest service in a wide range of legal fields. Macaulay & Riddell is a firm of integrity and confidentiality, and has extensive experience in civil and criminal law, corporate and commercial law, child and family law, employment law, estate planning, administration of deceased estates, drafting of contracts, divorces, and all aspects of property law. With a total of four admitted conveyancers and two notaries,

Macaulay & Riddell specialises in the conveyance of property and matters relative to land and notarial work. We have a conscientious team dedicated to transferring immovable property, especially homes, as well as farms and commercial property. We also attend to the registration of Bank Morgage Bonds and private bonds (morgage and notarial). As well as all other types of servitudes and general notarial work.
